Which home tutors should I choose?
There are mainly 4 types of home tutors in the local market now, each with their own characteristics, qualification and experience.
1. Student Tutors – Polytechnic Student / ‘A’ Level Student / Undergraduates
Student tutors are the most commonly used home tutors in Singapore. These group of tutors are well updated with the latest and current school curriculum as all of them underwent the local education scheme and would be much qualified tutors for students who are currently still in their primary, secondary and even JC education. Student tutors are the least costly and has the most flexible timetable as compare to other home tutors.
2. Part-time Tutors
Part-time tutors are usually tutors who continue tutoring after they have graduated from university. These tutors hold a full-time job and are often less flexible with their tuition timetable (mostly evenings or weekends). However, part-time tutors have more tutoring experience as compared to student tutors and thus command a slightly higher tuition rate in the market.
3. Full-Time Tutors
Full-time tutors are usually graduates who teach tuition as their full time job. They do not have any full-time commitment such as a day job and thus are the most committed bunch of tutors. Full-time tutors are seasoned tutors who are extremely familiar with the current school syllabus due to their experience. You can expect full-time tutors to be extremely professional in what they do, but do expect a premium for their tuition rates when you engage them. These group of tutors are the most sought-after home tutors especially for students taking their national examinations.
4. NIE Trainees / Ex-Teacher / Current Teacher
NIE trainees, current or ex-teachers are also a popular choice of home tutors because of their in-depth knowledge about the local education system. Due to their background, most current and ex-teachers are also able to identify focus of study as well as spot questions that may possibly appear in tests or examinations. This group of tutors are also trained by the National Institute of Education (NIE), thus possess the best ability to effectively communicate and teach educational materials. These group of tutors command the highest home tuition rates.
Thus, choosing the right home tutor largely depends on the needs of the student and the budget which the student is able to spend on tuition. For example, it would not be cost effective to hire a full-time tutor to give tuition to a primary 1 – 3 student as the syllabus covered could easily be taught by an undergraduate.
Having said that, Tichmi has the platform for Students/ Parents to liase / communicate directly with their shortlisted Tutors and they can checked and ask various question or negotiate their rates between both Student and Tutor. There are no SMS or Telephone calls from coordinator ( Tichmi DO NOT have any Coordinator )– all communications and agreement are within Tichmi CMS platform.
